    Determinising Parity Automata

    Parity word automata and their determinisation play an important role in automata and game theory. We discuss a determinisation procedure for nondeterministic parity automata through deterministic Rabin to deterministic parity automata. We prove that the intermediate determinisation to Rabin automata is optimal. We show that the resulting determinisation to parity automata is optimal up to a small constant. Moreover, the lower bound refers to the more liberal Streett acceptance. We thus show that determinisation to Streett would not lead to better bounds than determinisation to parity. As a side-result, this optimality extends to the determinisation of B\"uchi automata

    Proof, Proving and Mathematics Curriculum

    The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, a US based teachers association, strongly encourages teachers to make proof and reasoning an integral part of student mathematics. However, the literature shows that, far from being integral, proving remains compartmentalized within the North American school curriculum and is restricted to a specific mathematical domain. Consequently, students suffer in their understandings and are ill prepared for the rigorous mathematical proving that many of them will encounter later at the postsecondary level. The literature suggests that compartmentalization is mainly due to teacher’s lack of experience in proof and proving and their subsequent inability to guide students through the various stages of mathematical justifications. In this article, a brief overview of the history of proof is provided. Also, the nature of proof is explained and its importance in school mathematics is argued for. Teachers can help students better if they are aware of the stages that students experience over time as they become progressively more sophisticated at proof and proving tasks. By using a developmental model of proving, teachers are more likely to guide students effectively as they move from one stage to the other. Balacheff (1988) provides one of the most commonly used hierarchies to categorize student proof schemes. Few articles within the literature, however, apply this taxonomy in explicit ways by aligning examples of possible efforts to solve proof tasks with Balacheff’s stages of proof. This article illustrates in accordance with Balacheff’s taxonomy and by using examples, how a student might tackle a proof task. It is also argued that even though explanatory proofs are relevant to school mathematics, overemphasis on verbal proofs may result in watered down mathematical proofs. With an example I also demonstrate that students can transition fairly easily from explanatory proof to formal two –column proof

    A Non Invasive Heart Rate and Blood Pressure Remote Monitoring System

    Health monitoring systems have become an important research field today. Research on health monitoring were developed for many applications such as in home care units, emergency monitoring systems etc. This paper proposes the design of a non invasive wireless heart rate and blood pressure remote monitoring system based on an embedded board and Bluetooth wireless technology. The real time biomedical signal is sensed and measured using an optical measurement circuit based on Photoplethysmography technique. Blood pressure and heart rate readings are calculated on the basis of the developed algorithm and are displayed on the LCD screen. Moreover these numerical values of heart rate, systolic and diastolic pressure can be transmitted to any bluetooth enabled computer or smart phone via Bluetooth wireless technology

    Baseband Radio over Fiber Aided Millimeter-Wave Distributed Antenna for Optical/Wireless Integration

    A Baseband Radio Over Fiber (BROF) architecture is proposed, where upto four Radio Frequency (RF) carriers can be generated, while using the heterodyne photo-detection of only two optical signals. This proposed BROF architecture has a star-like structure and it is composed of six Radio Access Units (RAUs), where data is transmitted from the Central Unit (CU) to the Base Station (BS) and from the BS to the RAU over a distance of 20 Km and 0.3 Km, respectively, at a rate of 768 Mbps. The performance of the system supporting four carrier frequencies drops by at most 1dB, at a BER of 10-9, compared to conventional heterodyne photo-detection

    Analysis of TOPEX laser retroreflector array characteristics

    The joint U.S./French TOPEX/POSEIDON mission was successfully launched on August 10, 1992 for the study of ocean height variation using microwave altimetry. Accurate determination of the satellite orbit is paramount to the determination of the above phenomenon. To accomplish this, using laser ranging, the satellite is equipped with a laser retroreflector array (LRA) around the altimeter antennae. The goal of laser ranging is to obtain precision orbits with a radial accuracy of 13 cm to the center of mass of the satellite. This requires the laser range correction to the LRA reference be known at the sub-cm level and is quite a challenge considering the geometry of the LRA. Detailed studies were initiated by the TOPEX project office (Christensen) under the auspices of the CDP/DOSE project (Degnan) at Goddard Space Flight Center

    The Effect of <em>M. latifolia</em> Leaf Extract on High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)-Induced Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Rat Models

    Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition where the content of intrahepatic triglycerides (steatosis) rises, inclusive or exclusive of inflammation and fibrosis (namely steatohepatitis). It is acknowledged all over the world as the leading cause of chronic liver disease (CLD). Mulberry, a phytonutrient-rich plant belongs to the genus Morus, has been widely used as one of the conventional medicinal plants due to its chemical composition and pharmacological utility. Identification of leaf extract (M. latifolia) revealed chlorogenic acid, rutin, quercetin, caffeic acid and coumaric acid as functional bioactive principles. Objective of the current study was to evaluate the beneficial effect of M. latifolia in treating HFCS-induced metabolic disorders, namely, dyslipidaemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), in rat models. Study determined body weight, blood glucose, lipid profile, liver marker enzymes and histopathology of liver tissues. Study concluded that administration of M. latifolia leaf extract showed a significant decrease in body weight and the levels of lipid profile, blood glucose and liver marker enzymes in HFCS-induced rats compared to HFCS control rats. Histopathological studies confirmed the antihyperlipidaemic properties of M. latifolia leaf extract in reducing the hepatic fat accumulation causing regeneration of liver tissues in HFCS-fed rats
